I often hear many trainers or owners focused on correcting a behavior instead of being interested in understanding to the root issue and showing your dog what you want from them. For example, when your dog is pulling on the leash… rewarding them at your side, where you want them will help teach your dog what you want compared to just consistently popping the leash when tension is added.

Odie had a structured walk today, he gets two a week! Spoiled boy!!🤗 We mainly worked on increasing handler engagement. We practiced leave it when we came across pizza crust and neutrality around other dogs walking. He did so well!! At the end, I put him on a long line and we did some fun agility jumps as well as a sniffari!

I’m not great at capturing my training sessions, especially if they are outside. This was the best I could do for today. 🤣

LOOKING FOR FOSTERS🐾👀 (URGENT‼️⚠️)
🐾 Duke- He has a long and upsetting past. This gentle giant has experienced crate trauma causing hip dysplasia, a broken tail, and a couple other unknown (at this time) issues. He is very sweet to new people and does well with young children. He walks well on the leash and is house trained.
🐾 Loki- This sweet boy is currently living with young children and does amazing with them! He’s a bit shy but doesn’t take long to warm up. This crate trained and potty trained boy is ready to move into someone’s home. He still has to be vetted and neutered.

LOOKING FOR A FUREVER HOME🐶🏠 (In foster)
🐶 Copper- This loving bundle of energy is looking for an active home that needs a new furry addition! Copper is good with other dogs and very food motivated. He’s a blast to train! This smart cookie would love to curl up in someone’s bed at night and accompany them on a fun hike during the day.
🐶 Shep- This affectionate doll is looking for a home to spend her golden years in. She does well with children and cats but would prefer to be the only dog. This lovely docile lady would make a perfect companion!
🐶 Tatyton- This playful boy has a heart of gold! He does well with other dogs. We are currently working on his leash manners but otherwise he has been a great and loving guest at his fosters.
🐶 Bella- This gem would thrive in a calm household with no cats and as an only dog. Although she would prefer to be the only pet, she does well with children.
🐶 Kai- This pitty is stable! He does soo well meeting new people, getting his nails cut, receiving a bath, seeing dogs on a leash, etc. This lovely potato has lived with other dogs and children before, we are told he does not like cats.

A lick mat is a great tool for working on cooperative care! These easy to store silicone mats may be a bit harder to clean than a Kong but the ridges have a purpose!

Many lick mats come with a way to secure them on the ground, wall, or crate. The suction cup backing makes them a great distraction for your dog during grooming sessions, while the screw-on backs allow for easy attachment to a kennel for crate training. If you have a shredder at home, be sure to supervise them when using a lick mat.

DIY FLIRTPOLE!

If you know me, you know I love DIY projects and crafts! Learn how to make a flirt pole for less than $10 in less than 2 minutes. Once you have gathered all the materials needed, it’s super quick and easy. You’ll have a functional flirt pole in no time! Each client receives a flirt pole or snuffle mat with the purchase of a training program! Train with Channeling Canines to skip the drilling and get a free enrichment tool!!

All the items in this video were purchased at Home Depot. I’m a dog trainer, not Bob the Builder, so the proper terminology and safety protocols may not be used correctly (or at all) in the video or caption. 😂 However, you should still get the idea!

Materials used in this video-
• 3/4” PVC cap ($0.82 ea)
• 3/4” x 10’ PVC pipe ($6.29)
• 1/8” x 50’ rope ($5.23)
• 3/16” drill bit ($3.97)

Tips when making it:
• Add (hot, gorilla, crazy, etc.) glue or (duck, electric, etc.) tape to secure the PVC pipe cap. You can also heat up the PVC in hot water before connecting to get a super snug fit. You want the cap to be stuck on there!!
• Try using a bungee cord instead of traditional rope. I don’t know what traditional rope really is, but having some elasticity is a plus.
• The rope length is easily adjustable. Take the cap off and tie a knot at your desired length.
• Make sure your drill bit is turning clockwise. If it gets a little stuck, turn the bit counter clockwise to remove it.
• After adjusting the loop to your preferred size, make sure your knot is super tight.
• For large breeds: 3/4” - 1’ x 3’ - 4’ PVC pipe and 1/4” - 1/2’ x 4’ - 6’ rope.

Tips when using it:
• Keep the toy on the ground.
• Slightly wiggle the toy instead of waving it around in their face.
• Allow them to win the toy, don’t keep it from them the whole game, that’s not fun.
• Occasionally jerk the toy forward just before the dog gets it.

All the items in this video were purchased at Home Depot. I’m a dog trainer, not Bob the Builder, so the proper terminology and safety protocols may not be used correctly (or at all) in the video or caption. 😂 However, you should still get the idea!

Materials used in this video-
• 3/4” PVC cap ($0.82 ea)
• 3/4” x 10’ PVC pipe ($6.29)
• 1/8” x 50’ rope ($5.23)
• 3/16” drill bit ($3.97)

Tips when making it:
• Add (hot, gorilla, crazy, etc.) glue or (duck, electric, etc.) tape to secure the PVC pipe cap. You can also heat up the PVC in hot water before connecting to get a super snug fit. You want the cap to be stuck on there!!
• Try using a bungee cord instead of traditional rope. I don’t know what traditional rope really is, but having some elasticity is a plus.
• The rope length is easily adjustable. Take the cap off and tie a knot at your desired length.
• Make sure your drill bit is turning clockwise. If it gets a little stuck, turn the bit counter clockwise to remove it.
• After adjusting the loop to your preferred size, make sure your knot is super tight.
• For large breeds: 3/4” - 1’ x 3’ - 4’ PVC pipe and 1/4” - 1/2’ x 4’ - 6’ rope.

Tips when using it:
• Keep the toy on the ground.
• Slightly wiggle the toy instead of waving it around in their face.
• Allow them to win the toy, don’t keep it from them the whole game, that’s not fun.
• Occasionally jerk the toy forward just before the dog gets it.

Met up with an old client of mine today! I love visiting WestChester because I’m able to see some adorable faces that I miss so much! Took sweet Lucy for a walk today after receiving some loving hello kisses and wiggles :) We found a patch of snow in the park fulllll of bunny trails so of course I had to let Lucy explore. When we got back to her house after a fun and engaging walk, we played with the flirt pole and finished the visit off with a kibble scatter in the snow. I had a blast seeing her again!

Having a tag or label on your collar allows for easy identification. While a microchip is permanent, your dog will most likely need to be at a shelter or vet to be identified since they require a scanner. Microchip scanners can be easily purchased in stores like Amazon, but most individuals don’t have a scanner at home.
